Things I'm Ashamed I Don't Like

I spent some time this weekend thinking about all the things I feel like I should like, but don't. You know how it is -- if you fit a certain mold, you have those things you are supposed to like, and if you don't, well, it's awkward. I had an awkward moment with a friend recently, in which she started talking about Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog, and clearly expected me to join in the praise. But here's the thing -- I couldn't stand the damn thing! I didn't even make it through 1/4 of the video! But I'm supposed to like it, which lead to her, "What? You . . . you don't like it?" reaction.

Other things that fall into this category: Radiohead, Animal Collective, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Death Cab for Cutie, and Ron Paul. It goes both ways, of course. I'm a little embarrassed (although less so now than before) by how much I love Beyonce and generally adore bluegrass/revivalist music, as well as crushes I have on people like Liam Neeson and Anderson Cooper.

Just one more reason I'm an awkward panda.

  1. Other than My Girls, which is fantastic, I totally don't get Animal Collective either.

  2. As a staunch Joss Whedon fan, I have to comment on your reaction to Dr. Horrible (and no, I don't hate you for not liking it). Have you seen any other of Whedon's shows? Buffy the Vampire Slayer, its spinoff Angel, the short-lived but fantastic Firefly, or the short-lived but not-so-fantastic Dollhouse?

Dr. Horrible is probably the least accessible? Least understandable? Struggling to come up with the right words here. It's weird, that's for sure (though I do love it, partially because I'm absolutely smitten with Nathan Fillion). Anyways, my point is that you might like some of his other stuff better and that might ease you into Whedon fandom. Buffy is pretty relatable, for example. Lots of girls being independent and quirky and kicking ass (and who doesn't like that?). Whedon is an excellent storyteller and dialogue-writer and it'd be a shame to miss out on all that awesomeness. Even Dr. Horrible has some pretty interesting little plot twists in it.

Ok, I've rambled on enough for now...I'll take off my Brown Coat and go stand in the corner now :D

  3. It wasn't that Dr. Horrible was too weird for me. I'm a huge fan of weird -- early Tim Burton, Edward Gorey, stuff like that is right up my alley. I'm not sure what it was about it that didn't click with me, but it just didn't pull me in.

I gave Firefly and Serenity a shot about a year ago, since you hear a lot about it when hanging with engineers, and have caught random episodes of Buffy over the years (I'm a compulsive channel surfer). Neither really spoke to me. Sci-fi and fantasy really aren't my scene. I'm more into stuff like Mad Men, an amazing show (which you should totally check out, if you haven't) which is driven entirely by complex inner struggle and social constraint. Those darker corners of the human experience being played out really fascinate me.

The only exception is True Blood, but I think the appeal there is the relevence in the show. Even though it's a show about shape shifters and vampires, it addresses things like religious reactionary militias and suicide bombers. That, for me, is the draw of the show. And, of course, Bill Compton is a total stud. That doesn't hurt.
